CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL MOTHER EARTH DAY 22 APRIL 2019
If you are reading this, it means you inhabit planet earth as a human being - that together with other human beings and many other living species you call this HOME. When one thinks of HOME, one thinks of warmth, comfort, protection and love. Equally so, these attributes should come to mind when we think of our planet earth, or Mother Earth as she is lovingly known.
Mother Earth is willing and capable of providing us with warmth, comfort, protection and love – but only if we show respect and work to promote the harmony between all living beings, all ecosystems and herself.
International Mother Earth Day is thus celebrated “to remind each of us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance” – United Nations. “This Day also recognizes a collective responsibility, as called for in the 1992 Rio Declaration, to promote harmony with nature and the Earth to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations of humanity.”
We have this opportunity to raise public awareness around the world, about the challenges we face on this planet, among them being climate change, environmental pollution, and endangering of our protected species.
Chief among these on International Mother Earth Day is raising awareness on the education of climate change. As humankind continue to act irresponsibly, climate change continues to pose a very real risk to the earths ability to sustain us.
We can all do our bit to help towards alleviating the effects of climate change. Not sure how? Here are just a few simple tips:
1. REUSE, REDUCE, RECYCLE
You’ve heard this song and dance over and over, but it truly never gets old. People often wonder whether the little bit that they do will make any difference, but the truth is that with a population of over 7 billion on earth, each individual choice to “reuse, reduce recycle” will make a collectively massive difference.
2. CLEAN UP
As the move increases towards creating a more sustainable life, there are several volunteer groups or impromptu gatherings that pop up to clean up environmental pollution on beaches, along river banks, and other similar areas. Attend these. Be part of the movement.
3. CONSERVE WATER
Do you water your gardening the heat of the day when evaporation is at its prime? Do you waste the valuable rain water, leaving it to run off your roof into gutters and drains? We’ve got some handy gardening tips to help you conserve water. Click here to read the blog article.
4. PLANT A TREE
Trees are an essential element to sustainable life on earth. They create the air we breathe and they filter air pollution. Trees prevent soil erosion, help many birds and other animals with a place to live, and block the wind. These are just a few reasons to plant trees. You can find many more on the delightful Greentumble website
5. DON’T USE CHEMICALS
Every chemical that you use in your household will wash away somewhere into a drain and eventually poison our earth. There are so many organic alternatives available on the shelves if you must buy, but did you know you can go one better and make your own! A simple google search will provide you with many useful recipes for making organic (and very effective!) household products. Try it!
So go on, be the change. Put some meaning into International Mother Earth Day 2019 and commit to at least one small change. Feel free to share these with us on our social media, we’d love to see your ideas!
