YOUR APRIL GARDEN
You’ve noticed the subtle change in the air, haven’t you? The sun is rising a little later, there’s a fresh crispness to the air, the air conditioner is taking a well-earned rest, and you’re not waking up drenched in sweat
Looking after a garden is an ongoing affair and like any relationship, it really does take regular and ongoing maintenance, especially at this time of the year. With all the rain, weeds grow faster than the plants so generally speaking every plant in your garden needs to be cared for specifically.
The service of composting can be thrown around in the garden services industry as an optional or unnecessary procedure but we see composting as a vital and essential service in every garden. This blog explains the procedure, benefits, and best timing for composting your garden beds.
Traditionally our rain fall reduces now. This is the time when one leans heavily on an irrigation system to keep our lawn and gardens well watered and looking good. Take some time to run your irrigation system and inspect for any repairs that may be needed. If you are not technically minded (like me), call us, and we will send in Phillip, our irrigation specialist, to complete an irrigation service for you. Tip 1: Check each spray head and ensure that it is dispersing water correctly and is facing in the right direction...watering the wall or driveway is not a good idea.
Tip 2: Reset your iIrrigation controller to your Autumn programme. A deep watering three times a week is far better than a short watering daily.
Tip 3: Be water wise and check for any leaks or breaks in your pipe. These are easy to repair.
Water Wise Fact for the month: A garden irrigated by a well designed irrigation system uses less water per month than a garden watered at the same intervals by hand. I suppose one would call this human error ... or human generosity. Think of your own or your garden helpers watering habits, would it be wiser to invest in a system that delivers the correct amount of water and on schedule?
Drinking water for creatures and all your helpful predators, such as birds, frogs and insects is essential, in a healthy ecosystem. Try to include a birdbath or grinding stone, a small pond or even a bog garden in your garden. Besides these items providing life giving water, they are ideal elements to add interest and personality to your garden. A bog garden is a fabulous idea to excite the wild life visitors to your garden. I attended a wonderful talk about garden creatures and the speaker referred to any watering point in your garden as “McDonald’s”, the quick “take away“ where all garden residence will always get a drink and a juicy bug burger in a flash.
