YOUR SPRING GARDEN - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
YOUR SPRING GARDEN
Spring is finally here which means it’s time to get off our cosy couches and start enjoying the great outdoors again, and also getting our gardens ready for summer. By tackling some of those mundane but very necessary tasks now, you will be able to enjoy a fantastic planting season later on.
Here are some top tips on getting your garden ready for summer.
CLEAR YOUR GARDEN OF WEEDS
This is important! Clear away those weeds, down to the last seedling growing between the cracks of the paving and start getting your soil into prime condition by adding lots of compost to new and existing flower beds. They will reward you handsomely!
PREPARE FOR THE WINDS
This time of year is generally windy, so your garden needs to be prepared to withstand the wind. Wind breaks should be erected in areas where the garden is very exposed as a protective measure. Young plants and roses should also be protected by tying plants securely to their stakes to prevent them getting damaged by the wind. Be careful not to tie them too tightly though! A relaxed tieback in the form of a figure of eight around the stake and the main stems will still allow some movement and do the job.
TREAT YOUR LAWNS
If you have runner-type lawns like Berea, or some of the tougher grasses like Cynodon, then you’ll need to give your lawns some TLC before summer comes. This means giving them a sharp cut and some decent raking to remove those old, dead leaves and other bits that the wind has blown in. Spike with a garden fork to allow food, air and water to reach the roots and feed generously with lawn fertilizer. Finally, you can level them out a bit and cover with some lawn dressing. Hello luscious green lawns!
